The story of the Black church is the story of a people’s unwavering quest for freedom, dignity, and spiritual wholeness. It is a story that begins long before the first brick was laid for a sanctuary in America, reaching back to African spiritual traditions, moving through the tragic corridors of slavery, and rising triumphant through campaigns for justice and equality. The Black church has been a spiritual compass, a political engine, a cultural wellspring, and a place of refuge. It is a living testament to the enduring spirit of a community that refused to be broken.

This course explores the origins, development, and contemporary significance of the Black church, from the “Invisible Institution” of enslaved communities to modern expressions that shape culture, politics, and ministry today. You will trace key historical movements and figures, examine how theology and worship practices emerged in resistance to oppression, and analyze the Black church’s enduring role as a hub for spiritual formation, social advocacy, and community uplift. By the end, you will be equipped to connect historical foundations to present‑day leadership and ministry contexts.

  1. Understand the catalyst of the emergence/creation of the Black church (Invisible Institution).
  2. Recognize the diversity of Black church expressions and their contextual significance.
  3. Describe key historical movements and figures in the Black church tradition.
  4. Analyze the social, cultural, and theological impact of the Black church across history.
